First, the small and intense:
Seriously, that was a lot of fun to make. You can see a bit of the back of the thumb, which I striped rather than work in pattern, just because.
Now, the large and mindless:
These sleeves of my Anise are also done, they just need to be attached. Then I knit the collar, and, PRESTO!, new warm sweater for the Boston Winter that Will Not Give It Up Already. By the way, the buttons are just for show; this is actually a pullover, not a cardigan. I thought about making mine a cardigan, but I envisioned how the front would drape when open, that is, poorly, like a ripped-open box top, and realized I would always wear it closed anyway. I purchased the buttons, which are made of nut, at Yarns in the Farms just a few hours ago; Jill and Tyler, two of the knitters who work there, suggested the color, which is a bit more pink than in this photo. I never would have thought of this, but I love it.
On that note, I also love the feedback I get on my blog. So, in honor of the fact that I've had the blog for about 1 year and two weeks now, I'm having a contest of sorts. Please comment on this post, and I will randomly choose a name from among those who commented and send this:
AMONG OTHER THINGS from the Yarn Room that I did not have a chance to photograph today. Indeed, I will send a package of desirable yarn to a random commenter in celebration. To encourage the comments, because when you comment I go read your blog, because we must have some similar tastes and interests. And so the virtual version of that yarn store input I got today continues.

Love that mitten! The stripe-y thumb is a nice little surprise. The buttons are a great choice as well. Interesting they're made of nut!
Happy blogiversary! I have been reading your blog for about six months now, and I have to say that I really enjoy your take on knitting - colorful and fresh, often playful and surprising, always inspiring.
I'm normally a very matchy-matchy type person when it comes to button shapes, but those are just lovely! I can't wait to see the finished pullover, arms and all!
Endless Boston winter,eh? My knitting soul envies you. I just had to hurry up to finish my mittens because it's light jacket/no jacket weather in Atlanta already.
I'm glad you like the feedback from blogging because I do enjoy reading your blog! Your projects always inspire me to push myself into more complex or comprehensive knits. I'm always looking forward to more from you!
Love the mittens the colorwork looks great.
Loving the fair-isle mitten. Great bright colour combo, as always. Also can't wait to see Anise done. The buttons are the best.
I never replied your comment about my snowshoeing. You were wondering where I go. Well, I live in Ottawa, which is a fantastic city if you love living in an urban area, but also doing lots of stuff in nature. I basically live downtown, yet I can be in the middle of the forest in about 20 minutes. Mind you, the winters here are absolutely crazy. Luckily, I love playing in the snow (around here, it's a survival mechanism.)
Congrats on your blogaversary. You're definitely one of my favourite bloggers, and I always look forward to reading your posts and comments. Not to mention your killer guns (I wouldn't want to mess with you!) and fantastic sense of style. Plus, you give the best libation tips. Rusty nail, here I come!
Hi, I've commented before but for the record I found you originally from Neiman at Knitty.
I almost never knit sweaters (short sleeve is better), I almost never do someone else's designs, but your design will not leave my mind. Might end up doing it, I hope. In my spare time.
The mittens are totally up my alley, great job. Colorwork is the most soothing experience I know, and thinner yarns are so satisfying in a finished item. Wonderful.
Thanks for the blog. I'm loving it.
(The hair color change was very interesting to me, a 49 yr old who has never dyed her hair, period. Not even temporarily. Wore a wig in a play once, though.)
What kind of nut are those buttons made of?
I've been lurking around your blog since Neiman came up on Knitty.
Your comment about the endless Boston winter tickled me. I've barely worn a jacket at all because I thought it was so unseasonably warm!
I blog here: http://altus.wordpress.com/
"Ripped open box top..." -- funny!
Love the mitten, too. Looks like a blast, and the Anise will be gorgeous with those buttons!
I LOVE the mittens! I really like that they're striped on the inside. And that sweater is beautiful.
I've commented before, and I get comments from you on my blog from time to time. Thank you! :) I'm a sucker for comments. It makes blogging all that more interesting.
Now I just need to cross my fingers that lady luck picks me this time! ;)
Hello Weaver!
I love your blog - quirky to the enth degree, queen of the unexpected (a librarian in a previous life? - compliment!!) Can't wait to see Anise's arms all sewn in.
I love adding non-functional buttons to anything and everything. About a year ago, I was on a buttoned up handwarmers kick. I just sewed on some fake ones because I couldn't get it to actually look attractive.
I've read your blog since I saw your design in knitty. I'm still patiently awaiting the day I can order yarn for that one. eff you, budget imposed yarn diets!
I'm a little late to the party cos' I was away this weekend : ) I love your Anise, the colour is very pretty in that design, is that moss stitch under the buttons? Yours is one of my favourite blogs to read so I hope there are many more years to go, and thanks for all your comments on mine, they make me smile!
What a lovely mitten! And I am wondering: what type of nut are the buttons made of?
Happy blogiversary!
I cannot wait to see Anise modeled - love the buttons! I cannot wait to see this modeled!
Love your mittens. The pattern looks like a lot of work ;-). The colors are lovely.
Looking forward to se the Anise with sleeves.
Who can resist a random contest? Not me!
Hello, I'm a new reader, and I think I got here from Knitty, when I decided Nieman will be my first try at knitting with two colors...someday!

I also found your blog via Knitty and since then I've become an avid reader: your design sensibility, your fearless use of color, and your superb taste are inspiring and great, smart fun. Thanks to you I'm also making Anise, have discovered WEBS and other swell blogs. Thanks so much from another cyclist who knits.
those mittens are amazing!
Anise looks like it is going to turn out really well - I can't wait to see it!
Couldn't resist leaving a comment after that kind of solicitation! I love your knitting, your taste is really beautiful and witty. George Romero's movies, though? TOTALLY count as art films. Wonder what that says about MY taste...
I've been reading your blog almost since you started it, but I don't think I've ever commented. Your knitting is always so inspiring, and I love hearing about your adventures. I've also been struggling with job searchiness throughout the past year, so it's good to not feel alone in that. Anyway, beautiful knitting, and happy blogiversary!
Hello,
unabashedly delurking for that yarn! i have you as a friend on ravelry...
it's so encouraging to read your blog and i love to see what you're working on! it was great to see the completion of that mitten!
Count me in! I like reading your blog because you have excellent taste in knitted items and personal style in general. inspiring to me. cheers,
KT

I covet your buttons.
And I fancy your knitting.
I, too, have been reading your blog regularly since stumbling upon it from Knitty.
I've read your blog since pre-Nieman days, of course - in fact, I recall the very moment when I realised that the delightful Nieman design was by a blogger I actually 'knew'! Brought a tear of pride to my eye, that did... anyway, happy about-a-year blogging and here's to many more!
I really like the shade of green you picked for that sweater! And I totally agree with you about the never-ending cold and wind...did you notice the thundersnow on Sunday? Or did that only hit Cambridge and not the other side of the Charles?
Happy blogiversary! I enjoy both the knitting and the non-knitting content of your blog. Nice hair, btw.
Amazing mitten!
I have some Socks That Rock on order. Can't wait.
PS..I am the new admin on New England Knits webring and cleaning house so all the blogs can finally be circled. Give it a try!
I too love the mitten. But more importantly I like seeing the hair color changes!!! I have been reading the blog since your sweater was in knitty. I will make that one day--I love it and the color combo...
I really like the pullover. and the nut buttons. I have to wait to knit a pullover for myself since I just had baby boy #3 and well, my measurements are a bit wonky. Besides the fact that it is summer in Australia. Yuck.
Michelle
The mitten looks so good! I need a large and mindless project right about now. Yours is looking very promising!
Oh and happy blogthday! I love reading your stuff. :-)
