It's a new design in the Winter Knitty! For excellent modeled photos and the free pattern, go here (the photos died with the hard drive on this machine). Enjoy! I've been wearing it just about every day since I finished it in October, aside from the days that friends of mine were borrowing it. Though I borrowed the name from Leonard Cohen, it was inspired by a photo of Joe Strummer wearing a jacket with the collar turned up.
The yarn I used, Fly Designs Woolly Singles, is what would happen if Malabrigo and Manos had a child: Far softer than Manos, far less pilly than Malabrigo. The flat photo of the sweater published on Knitty was taken after over two months of solid wearing and several hand washes, just to demonstrate how it holds up.
Enjoy! It's the simplest, warmest, and most versatile thing I have ever made.

I am the biggest fan of Fly Designs yarn! I have 2 pairs of socks that are over 4 years old with lots of wear and no signs of thinning!
Anyway, your sweater on Knitty is simply gorgeous!

Wow, that is awesome! Congratulations. The pics on Knitty are great. My particular fave is the one where you're clinging to the chain link fence, mmrroaw. The jacket would make any punky androgene happy.

i love this jacket...and now i need to dig out the old Concrete Blonde album....its in one of these shoe boxes here....
This pattern is beautiful, and hopefully will be relatively easy for an inexperienced knitter. My question is: can I knit this without all those dropped stitches at the side? I fear they'll be drafty. How many stitches should I add to give it the same ease as the original pattern? I'll be knitting the 1X size. Thank you for your help.

In bed sick and discovered your blog through Knitty and this wonderful pattern. Sadly I live in the UK so cannot purchase this yarn here and am hoping I can find a substitute though it does look unusual.... Like the blog - it has whiled away some hours today
