The Recession Series: Free Pattern #1

The Opie Hat!

Named after Opie in Sons of Anarchy. All season I admired the fact that he rocked his "man slouch" hat, so I made one!

Download it here for free:

I want one!

I used 1 skein of Malabrigo Lace in black, held doubled. SO, I'm going to send one reader the second skein of this yarn that I purchased when I thought the hat would take 2 skeins, so someone can make their own Opie Hat (or something else, of course).

The contest? Give me an example of a garment you've seen that you would like to, or have, used as an inspiration for a handknit... it can be from TV, a photo, anything. Just give me a link to a visual that you find inspirational. The inspirational look or garment does not itself have to be knit. One caveat: Nothing from Harry Potter. It's been done. And I'm not a fan (there, I said it, okay?).

I'm always looking for new ideas from unusual sources, so I'll pick my favorite and send you a skein of black Malabrigo Lace, as well as a some other stuff from my extensive fiber stash.

I don't know how you feel about Lord of the Rings, but I would love to see Eowyn's vest/corset as a knitted pattern.

Well, the creator of Sons of Anarchy sent me the link to your blog and I appreciated YOUR creation on YOUR website, so IT is my favorite. Plus, I play Opie.

You probably know this one but always The Sartorialist. Especially today's post, Jan. 19th, Via Tortona, Milano. That coat! the stockings, the wristers, the color combinations, her hair, her shoes. All of it is inspiration. Link: http://www.thesartorialist.com/photos/1179costumestripeWeb.jpg

Sadly I can't post a link because it appears to not be pictured on the internet, but I love a sweater that appears in the BBC version of Agatha Christie's The Hollow - a Hercule Poirot mystery staring David Suchet. During the murder scene, the character Midge is wearing a fantastic shawl collar cardigan in a fantastic red-orange. I have the yarn for it. I just haven't figured out how to screen capture enough shots of the dang thing to figure it out!

Oh, and greetings from East Lansing, MI where it is -2 without the windchill right now. Brrr!

I think you've probably seen this, but my favorite of my photo-based knits is a jacket inspired by my grandfather. The photo (of him as a little boy) that inspired the design is over here.

I love your "recession series" idea, by the way.

Cool hat pattern! Thanks.

I find inspiration in companies like Toast, Pringle, Habitat, or designers like Stella McCartney, McQueen etc.. I can't afford their clothes, but I can knit similar items (tailored to me of course.)

I love the costumes from the "Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events" movie - especially Violet's rich and layered textures. I would love to see something victorian but updated.

I love Firefly so the blanket I want to knit next was inspired by that show (and the movie Serenity). I didn't come up with the pattern but it is inspiring me to knit yet another baby blanket, does that count? :)
It's on Rav- http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/serenity-2

I was recently inspired by the costumes in the movie "City of Ember". Lina has a great multi-coloured sweater in what looks to be a mix of garder stitch and stockinette. I can't find a good picture of it but you can see glimpses of it in the trailer. http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=kkSFsbv6eUg

Actually I'm not sure how interesting that would be to knit. Maybe if I had a knitting machine...

Love the Opie. Man Slouch is a great term. I've been having an obsession with the garter stitch shawl that was in the recent Tess of the d'Urbervilles on Masterpiece Theater. Gemma Arterton totally rocked it and is my new girl crush. Sorry I can't find a decent picture of it.

the "Opie" is just what my son has been asking me for. Thank you for designing a slouch that is manly.

I was inspired a few years by a series of books that I read by Elizabeth Peters about an Egyptologist. The main character was always checking her husband and son for their "ribwarmers" that they should never leave the house without them. I knit a version for my son after discovering that it's a close knit vest.

He loved it, outgrew it, and now it's mine.

this isn't very creative but I watch grey's anatomy and am always inspired to knit from the awesome knitwear they are always sporting. Most of it is cold weather gear (based in Seatle, WA so thats a no brainer) But it always makes me want to find a pattern or even write a pattern to serve the purposes I have. (I live in AZ and even in the mountains where I am it doesn't get much below 20 even with windchill)

I really like the jumper the main character wears in city of ember. I also like the fact that she lived in a yarn store. I tried to find a good photo but alas failed. This is the best that I could do - http://www.filmofilia.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/embercelebutopia3_m.jpg

If I could only find a pattern (or the actual hat) from #1 in my list of 7 things. It is from the movie Humboldt County.

My sister made me one and I love it! Thanks for the pattern!

Love this pattern. I've used it now a dozen times, and it's suitable for dozens of variations. I know it by heart. Thanks for it.

One tip if you're using the Malabrigo ... Do NOT wash in warm water. Dry clean or gently hand wash in cold only and lay flat to dry. It shrinks up to nothing, and I've ruined three of these hats that way.

I don't know if you're still looking for pattern ideas but I found one that I can't even begin to figure out. In the beginning of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Katniss is wearing a vest...thing that is amazing to behold! If you can make a pattern for that I would definitely want a copy! :-) tashinaeggleston@gmail.com
