(Which I highly recommend for anyone who is looking for some new designs that work on everybody and are clever without being tricky. I can see this book becoming a sort of gift knit bible.)

White Whale news: Only one design to finish, on time for a fall release! I finally finished the very large design in Squishy Lace (color: Weaverknits Grellow, of course) that I knit almost entirely during my European vacation, including while sitting on the street in Amsterdam (I don't remember this situation, but Chris captured it)

while watching the Eurocup in pubs

while waiting for the Tour de France riders to zip by

and in Schiphol airport after being awake for nearly 30 hours.

I like to think about all the places this design has been, and how, as a result, it embodies a little piece of each of them, like stamps in a passport. 2000 yards of laceweight yarn become 2000 yards of experience. Soon the sample will begin its travels with me. Look for it in person at Rhinebeck. Wait, wait, it will be the only grellow thing with a 65-inch diameter. You won't be able to miss it.

While I Was Out: Charlie Sweater

A few months ago I had a chance to design a man's sweater for Spud & Chloe. I love unisex styles, and I love the fact that THEY picked my very favorite grellow color combination for this piece. This was one of those projects that came together so quickly it didn't even feel like work.

The guy modling it is perfect, too. It's called the Charlie Sweater and you can find it here. Adding some waist shaping would make it flattering on a woman, too.

So life has been excellent while I've been away. Now that I'm back, I'm focused on finishing up the patterns for White Whale Vol. 2 (hint), the next Container Ships pattern (hint), and five or six other things. Oh, and FINALLY getting my loom set up! Fortunately my studio space stays cool these days. Weaving is coming!

While I Was Out: ColorKnits

The second of the patterns that came out while I was on vacation is in Interweave Knits' eMag, ColorKnits. The result is an article about using complimentary colors and a pattern for a simple modular cowl. This magazine is AWESOME—my article is interactive if you have an iPad! It's like taking a mini-color theory class with me! It was so cool to be part of this issue.

And they had an awesome-looking woman model the cowl.

Note how I made purple the dominant color but got some yellow in there, too! I would be wearing this with a yellow jacket or sweater—or perhaps this new hoodie from Germany:

While I Was Out: Color CHALLENGE Pattern

While I recover from jetlag and savor the memories of vacation, let me take a moment to present the designs that were published while I was away. Design 1: Color CHALLENGE!

This design was inspired by The Fiberists' yarn. The Fiberists create their colors based on plants, animals, minerals, and the like, and give them the scientific names of said plants, animals, and minerals. I love this concept, and as soon as I heard about the yarns I knew I must design with them. For this design, I chose something outside my usual palette, Cornus florida (Flowering Dogwood) for the central panel.

Here, my sister rocks the design, which is modular and knit in one piece. Super simple, and a great way to use up some stash! The pattern is free on the Fibre Space blog—enjoy!
